What Is Reciprocity in a Relationship?

Reciprocity is a pattern in which both people contribute to the relationship and both people’s needs have meaningful room. It does not mean every task, text or gesture must be exactly equal.

Mutual responsiveness

Each person notices and responds to the other rather than one person carrying the emotional and practical load.

Flexible, not transactional

Healthy give-and-take changes with circumstances. Illness, work pressure or family responsibilities can temporarily shift the balance.

Repair matters

Reciprocity includes willingness to address imbalance when one person raises it.

Persistent one-sidedness is information

If your needs are repeatedly dismissed while your contributions are expected, the issue is not solved by giving even more.

A useful standard: Advice should help you see the relationship more clearly, not promise control over another person.
